What was God's purpose in making man?

The answer to your question, Fr Hart, is apparent in Rev 4: 11 - "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for THY pleasure they are and were created."

It is so very humbling, is it not? Yet contemporary culture tells us just the opposite... that is, for OUR pleasure are and were we created. To gratify self in a myriad of many-splendored ways which are constantly being updated to sanctify and make endless the pursuit of the almighty greenback rather than Almighty God.

The Virgin Mary's magnificat in Luke 1: 46-47 states: "And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." Imagine how much pleasure God must have felt upon hearing her words. No wonder she was chosen to be the Mother of God.

We must remember that "for thy pleasure" in that sense means, "for thy will."

Mary praised God and did His bidding (followed His will). She also pointed to Christ at the wedding feast of Cana... Do whatever He tells you. Like Mary (and the angels) we are called to praise and worship Him; we are also called to proclaim His message. Such is His pleasure and for such were we created.
