On Jan 10, I ran a piece based on an interview with Fr Joseph Fessio, SJ, a friend and former student of Benedict XVI. In it, he spoke of a private gathering the Pope held with a small group of scholars at Castelgandolfo, during which Fessio said Benedict had asserted that Islam was incapable of reform.
Sandro Magister, at Chiesa, has just run a piece in which Fessio restates the case, that Islam is capable of reform and can be harmonized with modernity, but at a steep price.
