The Evangelists and Paul agree that is is essential to believe that He is the Son of God. Martin Luther believed that the gospel in a nutshell is "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son..." and the Son came into the world to save repentant sinners. The Holy Spirit moves us to repentance. The Holy Trinity is always at work to save and restore. From the beginning this has been so. So the righteous before Jesus came into the world are not without hope. Jesus indicates that they annticipated "His day and rejoiced."Alice C.
